Now summer is officially over it’s time to dig out the Hi-visible running gear
Running safety
Now the days get shorter chances are you’re going to be running when it’s dark so to keep you safe here are some points to bear in mind for your safety:-
1- Wear bright clothes and safety lights – I’m always amazed at the amount of people who don’t light up – it’s important to be seen from both the front and back so wear flashing arm bands/head torch or simply carry a torch – the reflective strips on most clothing simply isn’t enough
2- Always run facing the traffic – always important but especially in the dark!
3- Try not to run new routes for the first time in the dark – pot holes or over hanging tree limbs can all catch you out and cause injury.
4- Carry your mobile phone with you in case of emergency.
5- No one plans to have an accident but by carrying ID containing any important medical info can be vital in an emergency situation. If you have a phone that does emergency details update it!!
6- Wear a hat – by wearing a peaked hat you can tilt your head down so you are not blinded by on coming vehicle headlights.
7- Ditch the head phones for night time running. This increases your awareness of surroundings and possible dangers.
8- Vary your route – don’t run the same route same time and same dates being predictable makes you higher risk of a predator.
9- Tell a friend/relative or anyone you trust what route you ate going and how long you will likely be away.
If you have iPhone you can download find my iPhone app and share log in info with a trusted one so they know where you are.
10- Safety in numbers. Where possible run with a buddy.
11- Don’t share your runs on social media BEFORE you go out.
12- Above all trust your instinct – if it looks to dark to run down or you are worried – don’t do it. If you feel you are being followed report it to the police
