On Sunday 25th January, Strathclyde Park played host to the annual Scottish Veteran Harriers Road Relay Championship. This race is open to teams of runners over 35 years of age, with teams of 4 competing for the men and 3 for the ladies. The route is a 3.8 mile circuit around the mostly flat paths of Strathclyde Park forming a circuit of the loch. Weather conditions were kind, with mild temperatures making for great racing and a big field (with over 70 teams toeing the start line).

Troon had one team competing, a strong ladies team of Laura McGarrity, Anne Noble and Caroline Mutch. Laura took the first leg and was always well placed, storming round the 3.8 miles in 23’45 (6th fastest lady on the day) setting the team up nicely in 5th place in the ladies race (well up with the mens’ teams with the races running simultaneously). Laura handed over to Caroline on the second lap and she continued in good form going round in 27’35 and holding 7th place. Anne then took over on the “glory leg”, and with the Tortoise ladies fighting to retain their position Anne ran another great leg in 27’54 to secure a fine 8th place. A great top ten result for the ladies and Troon’s best result at this championship event.

This is a tremendous event, well run and with a great atmosphere, it’s one that should be in everyone’s diaries for next year and is well worth supporting. As well as a chance to compete in a championship event it offers a real chance to hone some speed work in conjunction with the longer winter training miles.
